On Saturday I went up to London to see the Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace. It was a good day mostly for the exhibitions seen rather than the stalls full of things I wanted to buy. I held myself back from too much spending – partly because I have too many art supplies, and partly because I wasn’t sure what sort of things I’d be needing for the upcoming part of the course. Having been and seen all the suppliers, and gotten listings of their information, I’m pretty happy that I can mail-order anything I need when come to needing it.
The exhibitions were cool. My course tutor Terrie Hitchcock and the Eastleigh College quilting tutor Susan Chapman had an exhibition called Bodies of Evidence which took inspiration from stances in dance and sport.
My favourite exhibition was Diane Bates’s Painted Lady Collection. I loved the dresses and corset that seemed to have been built rather than sewn. They were so intricate in detail.
I also liked Ruth Issett‘s Connected with Colour. Though I preferred her paper work to her textile work. I love brightly coloured things.
I’ll definitely be going next year. Seeing all these people’s work is inspiring, but daunting – I don’t know if I have it in me to be as talented and artistic.
